Kim & John | Iowa Wedding Photographer

Kim was my roommate for 3 years in Chicago — I’ve written about her here and here following a recent visit with her in Iowa City.  John is her fiance, and I’ll be working with Brenda Strief of Town of Country Events when I photograph their wedding in August.

I knew from the first time I met John that I liked him. A lot.  I loved the way he & Kim looked at one another, told stories together, and generally enjoyed each other.

After hearing the following story, though, I knew he was perfect for Kim.

Kim makes a lot of lists.  But, she’s a busy woman, so a lot of things on those lists don’t necessarily get done easily.  And not completing her lists is a bone of contention in Kim’s world.  Let’s just say that I’ve seen her… frazzled.

One time, when John was visiting her from Iowa (Kim lived in Chicago at the time), Kim left John home alone when she went to work.  While she was gone, John went through her to-do list and knocked off as many things as possible.  Changed the oil in her car.  Bought a new shower curtain liner.  Whatever the task, John tackled it with enthusiasm, his mere motive to make Kim’s life easier in a way that showed he really *got* her.

To me, that’s incredible.  I think expensive/public/large-scale gestures can be super fun, for sure.  But there’s something about intimate, personal acts of kindness that speak volumes to me about the dynamics of a relationship.  Throughout the past several years, I’ve seen John’s love for Kim expressed in the most respectful, appreciative, thoughtful, courteous, authentic ways (everything from how they celebrate the holidays to the way he proposed to her), and it’s impossible not to savor their partnership.

Anyway, it was so fun photographing them and their rescue dog, Rocky (clearly a huge hit in my book — he literally gives high fives, which is just too awesome) at both their home and the site of their upcoming wedding ceremony (a Shakespearean Theater in downtown Iowa City).  I love their home, all cozy style & relaxing porch swing (even in Vortex temperatures) — everything is a direct reflection of who they are as a couple.  Huge smiles over here as I post the following collection :).
