Old Orchard Beach | Maine Photographer

V & I are in Maine at the moment, savoring a small part of this very rich winter.  And, by rich, I mean a winter blanketed in velvety soft snow, arctic blasts, and dramatic words like ‘snowpacolypse’ and ‘vortex.’  We’re working several projects & shoots in this part of the country that I’m looking forward to sharing shortly but, for now, I’ll paint a little atmosphere.

Picture this: a seaside village sporting seven miles of sandy beaches, a 500 foot long pier full of restaurants & shops, and a beachfront amusement park.  Touting itself as a Garden By the Sea since 1631, many of the local structures retain (or at least emulate) its colonial feel and historic personality.  Railroad service to Portland and Boston opened in the mid-19th century, helping to boost Old Orchard into a proper resort destination; and, these days, the area is synonymous family fun as its fried fair food, carousel, ferris wheel, and arcade delights children of all ages.

I first visited Old Orchard in 2010 and fell in love.  Well, with the wintertime version of it.  I’m sure, in the summer, it’s packed with fantastic frolic.  But I’m a weirdo.  I love nothing more than a sleepy town with that ‘abandoned’ look, and Old Orchard during the slow season is exactly what I’m talking about.  Some places are open (the occasional coffee shop or pizza joint) but most places are closed-up from December through May, so the area empties out.  And… it’s perfect.  The peace and quiet afforded by a tourist town drained of tourists is so beautiful to me — inspiring, even, because I find it stirs the imagination.

When the opportunity arose to come out from Park City in February, V & I were all over it.  And when we came upon this positively lovely unit on VRBO.com, it was a done deal. The owner Lynne has been a dream to work with in setting up dates, planning our visit, and just generally being available to me, and I want, in return, to share some images from her beautiful condo.

Please, enjoy a taste of our visit below!
