Austin Photographer | Texas Portraits
I shot this portrait session in Wimberley, Texas, earlier this year with Bratislavan rocker/musician Patrik Novotny. V & I were in the Austin area for SXSW 2015 coverage (and photographing musicians is an absolute favorite of mine), which was totally awesome, but I was also fired up to photograph around Texas. The weather, landscape, and greenery is unlike our home in Park City, Utah, and as a photographer it’s exciting to explore new places through your lens. I think that’s one of the reasons we love to travel so much: to capture new photographic territory. The texture and feel of the environment — the colors and light — translate differently onto my images.
We were particularly enthusiastic about this session due to the fog in the air. Mooooooody, right?! I love it. Definitely a departure from the natural-light-backlit-soft-prettiness of a lot of my outdoor portraits. We were in the backyard of the house we were renting in Texas Hill Country, and I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the dense air, the wiry trees, the thick green leaves, and rocky ground that comprised, to me anyway, an idyllic/dreamy portrait spot. The character of that scenery deserved a role in Patrik’s photos, adding a dynamic that belies his tattoos & piercings & skinny jeans.
Oh, and the putting green had to have its moment too (see the last photo).
